Abstract
Application of intelligent furnace cleaning at the STEAG Saarenergie Weiher Power Plant stopped production losses through coarse ash accumulated in the hopper. Furthermore, the boiler off gas temperatur can be kept stable and the maintenane and operating costs for the cleaning system were cut by 50%. This result is decisively attributable to the integrated SMART Clean System comprising diagnostics, intelligence, control system and cleaning equipment.
The performance of the on-load boiler cleaning system has a significant impact on the overall performance of the steam generator. Fouling and slagging in the furnace as well as in the convective heat exchanger zone leads to a reduction in boiler efficiency and reduction in availability such as
increase of furnace exit gas temperature
increase of attemperator spray rate
increase of boiler off gas temperature
damages in the hopper area and the wet/dry bottom ash system as a result of big slag formations falling down from the furnace walls or/and superheater
over-cleaning causes tube damage negatively effecting unit availability
All this shows quite clearly that the important criteria for a modern on-load boiler cleaning solution is to act flexible but selectively. This means to clean
as early as necessary
as little as necessary
only in required areas
as effective as needed

The above results which were achieved through application of this innovative cleaning technology at the STEAG Saarenergie Power Plant Weiher clearly show the advantages for today's operation of a steam generator with varying requirements.
Regarding application and the functioning mode of this cleaning technology, comprehensive experience and measuring results are available from the existing installations in fossil-fired power plants. The experiences of the plant owners/operators show that intelligent on-load cleaning reduces the fouling tendency in the convection part and improves heat absorption so that further increases of steam generator efficiency can be achieved.
